Karen began reading JRF scholarship applications and volunteering monthly with JRF after coming to the Annual Dinner in 2011. Her husband Frank suggested that she might be interested in JRF after he learned about us through his company, Battelle, which donates grants for scholarships.
“Being a woman and having two daughters is a huge motivation in supporting other women as they strive for a better life for themselves and their families. Supporting education is a win/win for all in our society.”
Like many JRF scholars, Karen is a parent, and instilling the value of higher education in her children is important. She says, “In assisting other women in daring to dream, don’t we support our whole society at large?”
Karen feels strongly that women should pursue majors that offer “secure, high paying jobs” such as STEM fields: science, technology, engineering and math. The future is bright for STEM majors with steady growth projected.back
